April is the hinge. Rainfall collapses from 69 mm to 16, the seasonal camps reopen, the roads firm up, and somewhere out on the sand the first pump engine coughs back into relevance.

April is the sleeper month for self-drivers: dry enough to travel freely, green enough to be beautiful, and still weeks away from any booking pressure.
Rain off a cliff
The long-term averages show April receiving 16 mm over just 3 rain days, down from 69 mm in March, with warm 29.2°C days and the first properly cool nights at 16.3°C. In most years the wet season is functionally over by mid-month.
Reopening month
The calendar of camps resets on 1 April. Hwange Bush Camp begins its April-to-November season near Robins, and Kapula beside Masuma Dam comes back into play for high-clearance travellers. With the black-cotton country drying, the full Main Camp, Sinamatella and Robins circuit becomes realistic again for the first time since November.
What the viewing is like
Honest answer: improving, not yet easy. The grass stands tall and golden, surface water persists in the bigger natural pans, and game remains spread out. But the direction of travel has flipped, and every dry week from here pushes more animals back toward the pumped waterholes. Waterbirds concentrate on the shrinking pans, which makes for underrated hide sessions. Nights are already cool enough to want a fleece on an early drive, without yet demanding the full winter kit of June and July.
Booking while it is still casual
Outside the Easter dates you can still put a trip together weeks rather than months ahead, including the concession camps. The April-specific move: this is the moment to email info@zimparks.org.zw for ZimParks lodges and chalets at Main Camp and Sinamatella, because they never appear on booking platforms and the winter-holiday requests have not landed yet.
