What a visit to Hwange actually costs

Budget one: self-drive camping at Main Camp

About $350 for two people over three nights, and here is the arithmetic. The camping line uses the ZimParks rate of $23 per pitch per night, and that single figure covers up to three people, so a couple pays $23 a night, not $46.

Park entry uses the $12 per person per day rate for international visitors sleeping inside the park, and the vehicle line uses the $3 per day rate for a foreign-registered car staying inside. All three figures come from the official ZimParks tariff published in February 2026, which replaced the old 2023 rates; most other websites still quote the old $20 entry fee.

We count three fee-days for a three-night trip. If the gate bills your departure day as a fourth day, add $24 for two people plus $3 for the vehicle. Sinamatella in the north takes campers at the same $23 pitch rate if you want the clifftop view instead.

Food, drinking water and everything you cook with are yours on top; Main Camp has a small restaurant but you should bring your own everything else, and there is no shop inside the park. If a tent on the ground is not your thing, a one-bedroom chalet at Main Camp is $60 a night per unit (2026 tariff), which lifts the same trip to about $460.

Budget two: Robins Camp, the mid-range that includes your park fees

About $2,420 for two people over three nights in high season. The obvious mid-range pick is Robins Camp in the far north-west, under private management since its ZimParks days and now the best-value serviced camp in the park. Full board with two game activities a day is $390 per person per night in high season and $300 in low season, on the operator's 2026 rates gathered July 2026, and the chalet rate includes your ZimParks fees, which almost nothing else at this price does.

Because the drives are included, your own vehicle mostly sits parked, and Robins has its own shorter route from Victoria Falls: 45 km of tar, then graded dirt, about two hours. The Robins sector also happens to hold the park's biggest buffalo herds and the park's most consistent predator reports, so the mid-range budget buys the strongest game country, not the leftovers.

Whether the fee-inclusive chalet rate also covers the daily vehicle fee is not published, so we budget the $3 a day separately; ask when you book. At the $300 low-season rate the same trip is about $1,880. Robins also has an electric-fenced campsite from $40 if you want its sector on a camping budget.

Budget three: fly-in to Wilderness Linkwasha

About $10,600 for two people over three nights, before flights. If you are flying in rather than driving, the top of the Hwange market is Wilderness Linkwasha on its private concession at the edge of the Ngamo Plains, closed to ordinary park traffic.

You land at Victoria Falls, take a light aircraft to the Linkwasha airstrip, and from there the camp runs your whole day: the June to October rate of $1,767 to $1,820 per person per night on Wilderness's own 2026 rate card covers park fees, meals, drinks and two activities daily, including the night drives and walking the concession allows and the public park does not. Pack soft bags; light aircraft hold you to 20 kg per person, camera gear included.

Wilderness does not publish charter prices, so the flight line stays open until your agent quotes it. Two ways to soften the number without leaving the concession: Linkwasha from $803 per person per night in the green season brings three nights for two to about $4,800, and Davison's Camp on the same concession, with the same traversing rights and guiding pool, runs $983 to $1,012 per person per night in high season, roughly half the Linkwasha rate.

Rates are the operator's own, gathered July 2026; the June to October band runs to $1,820 per person per night depending on the date, so the total can reach about $10,920. Book the flights through the same agent as the camp; the strips are private and the camps schedule the aircraft.

Sleep inside the park and your fees halve

Hwange prices park entry on where you sleep. An international visitor staying inside the park pays $12 per person per day; the same visitor driving in from a lodge outside pays $24. The vehicle fee moves the same way, $3 a day staying inside against $10 on a day visit, both from the 2026 tariff.

Over three days that is $72 in entry fees for two people sleeping inside against $144 commuting in from outside, plus $9 against $30 for the car. A lodge just beyond the boundary can be excellent value on its room rate and still cost you the higher fee every single day you enter, so when you compare a boundary lodge with one inside, add roughly $45 a day for two people and a car to the outside option before you compare anything else.

The fuel maths, dated

ZERA's ceiling prices put diesel 50 at $1.95 per litre and blend petrol at $1.96 per litre, both checked 12 September 2026. These are maximums, so pumps may charge slightly less.

The camping budget assumes about 690 km of driving: 390 km for the Victoria Falls to Main Camp round trip, plus around 300 km of park loops over three days. A loaded 4x4 across that mix of broken tar, diversions and Kalahari sand averages roughly 15 litres per 100 km, which is about 105 litres, or roughly $200 of diesel at the September 2026 price. The A8 roadworks make the tar stretch slower and harder on tyres than the distance suggests, so carry a spare you trust.

Assume there is no fuel for sale anywhere inside Hwange, including Main Camp, whatever older guides claim. Fill up in Victoria Falls, Bulawayo, Hwange town or Dete, and carry enough range for the whole circuit plus reserve.

Paying at the gate

Fees are set in US dollars and paid at the entry gate or at the ZimParks office of the camp you enter through, which means Main Camp, Sinamatella or Robins. Bring US dollars in cash, in small denominations. ZimParks publishes nothing about card payment at the gates, so plan as if there is none. Zimbabwean residents may pay in local currency at the prevailing rate.

Where the money surprises people

• Sleeping inside the park halves your entry fee: $12 against $24 per person per day international, and $3 against $10 for the car (2026 tariff). Over three days, two people and a vehicle save $93 by sleeping inside.
• Most websites still quote the old $20 entry fee. The February 2026 tariff replaced it after VAT came onto tourism services, so budget from the 2026 numbers and verify at zimparks.org.zw before you travel.
• The $23 camping pitch covers up to three people, so a third traveller adds only the $12 daily entry fee, and the trip cost per head drops sharply.
• The $60 per person sleep-out platforms at Guvalala and Makwa (2026 tariff) put you on an open deck above a waterhole all night, no staff, no fence. It is the cheapest extraordinary night in the park by a distance.
• The exclusive picnic sites such as Masuma and Shumba cost $235 for the whole site, up to six people (2026 tariff). Six friends pay about $39 each; a couple pays the full $235, ten times the ordinary pitch.
• Some lodges include your ZimParks fees in the rate and some do not, which shifts the real gap between two quotes by $12 to $36 per person per night. Robins and the Wilderness camps include them; always ask.
• ZimParks publishes no activity price list for Hwange, unlike Tanzania or Kenya. Camps set their own prices for drives and walks, so any website quoting exact activity fees is guessing; ask your camp.
• There is no published child rate on the 2026 tariff. Camps generally charge half for ages 6 to 12, but confirm at the gate before assuming children go free.
• A trailer or caravan is charged separately from the towing vehicle at $3 a day (2026 tariff).
• Gates close at 18:00 and you must be back in camp by then; arriving late can mean a fine, which is the cheapest fine in the park to avoid.
