Month by month

Hwange in December

By December the rains have settled in and Hwange has changed species. The dust is gone, the pans are scattered mirrors, and a park that was rationed by water six weeks ago is suddenly indifferent to it.

If you only want the answer

December is green-season Hwange in full: open all month, cheap, wet and nearly empty. Come for birds, babies and solitude, and keep your driving ambitions modest.

The second-wettest month

The long-term averages give December 158 mm over 20 rain days, days of 29.1°C and nights of 18.8°C, second only to January in rainfall. Growth is explosive, the impala lambing drop floods the vleis with prey, and the summer bird list runs to migrants you will see in no dry month.

What you get for showing up

Solitude, mostly, and prices to match. You can sit alone at a hide that had a waiting vehicle queue in September, and the top camps sell December at their deepest discounts. Sightings become earned rather than delivered, and each one, a leopard on a wet road, wild dogs threading the green, feels like yours instead of the itinerary's.

Draw your map smaller

This is the one month to strike the full northern circuit from a self-drive plan. The Robins and Sinamatella black-cotton country is at its least trustworthy, so work the Main Camp sector loops off the tar and count any dry spell that lets you go deeper as a bonus. A capable 4x4 with recovery gear stays mandatory everywhere off the spine.

Gates keep their 06:00 to 18:00 rhythm all summer, and the afternoon storm becomes your daily scheduling fact: mornings for driving, storms from the veranda.

The one booking exception

Most of December needs no lead time at all, with one carve-out: the Christmas to New Year week, when Zimbabwean and regional families fill the ZimParks lodges, chalets and campsites at Main Camp. If your dates touch that week, email for park accommodation well ahead; on either side of it, decide as late as you like.
