Hwange National Park: frequently asked questions
The questions first-time Hwange visitors ask, answered plainly and with current 2026 figures.
How much does it cost to enter Hwange?
International visitors pay $24 per person per day as a day visitor, or $12 per person per day if you are sleeping inside the park. That split catches most people out: staying in the park halves your daily fee. Vehicles are $10 a day for foreign-registered cars visiting, or $3 if you are staying over. These are the February 2026 ZimParks rates; most other websites still quote the old $20 figure.
Can I self-drive in Hwange?
Yes, and plenty of people do. You need a high-clearance 4x4 for the internal roads, you must be back in camp by 18:00, and you must carry enough fuel for your entire circuit because there is normally none for sale anywhere in the park. Bring all your food too; there are no shops.
When is the best time to visit?
August to early November. Hwange has no rivers, so as the dry season deepens every animal in the park depends on pumped waterholes and the concentrations become extraordinary. September and October are the peak, though October regularly passes 40°C. If you prefer green landscapes, birds and low prices over sheer density, come between December and April.
Can I do a night drive?
Not inside the national park, where driving after dark is prohibited and everyone must be in camp by 18:00. Night drives are offered on the private concessions bordering the park, so if that matters to you, book a camp on a concession rather than inside the park proper.
Is Hwange good for a budget trip?
Unusually good. A camping pitch costs $23 a night, ZimParks chalets at Main Camp start around $60, and you can rent an entire viewing platform above a waterhole for $60 per person. Add $12 a day in park fees while staying inside and Hwange becomes one of the most affordable great parks in Africa, provided you bring your own vehicle and supplies.
How do I get there from Victoria Falls?
It is about three hours by road: 172 km south on the A8, then 23 km of tar from the Cross Mabale turn-off to Main Camp. Robins Camp in the north is closer, around two hours. Charter flights from Victoria Falls airport reach the park's airstrips in about half an hour.
How do I book ZimParks accommodation?
Not online, unfortunately: ZimParks has no working booking portal. Email info@zimparks.org.zw or phone +263 8677707627; the Hwange regional office is on +263 779 559 236. Book well ahead for the platforms and exclusive picnic sites, which are limited and popular.
Is it safe, and do I need malaria tablets?
Hwange is a long-established, well-run safari destination. Standard rules apply: stay in your vehicle, keep well clear of elephant cows with calves, and be back in camp before dark. Zimbabwe is a malaria area year-round with risk lowest from April to October, so take prophylaxis and use repellent.
